Scotland has reached a significant renewable energy milestone with the complete operationalization of the £3 billion Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm, lauded by First Minister Humza Yousaf as a crucial step toward achieving the nation's net-zero goals.

SSE Renewables and TotalEnergies jointly announced the successful operation of all 114 Vestas turbines at the 1.1GW Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm, positioned 27km off the Angus coast. This wind farm, known as the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, has the capacity to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.6 million homes annually. Notably, it is served by a dedicated operations and maintenance center located in Montrose.

Humza Yousaf commented on the accomplishment, stating, "The Seagreen offshore wind farm represents a remarkable example of Scotland's efforts to unlock its renewable potential, positioning us to lead the global transition to a net-zero future. This pivotal moment for Seagreen is equally momentous for Scotland, bringing us one step closer to establishing a net-zero energy system that can provide affordable, reliable, and clean energy. Fulfilling our climate obligations remains a top priority for the Scottish Government, and we are equally committed to ensuring a just transition for workers."

UK Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho added, "Seagreen's full operational status is a testament to the resounding success of offshore wind in the UK. With the addition of Seagreen, the UK is now home to the world's five largest operational wind farms, solidifying our position as a global leader. Generating enough electricity to power the equivalent of 1.6 million British homes, Seagreen will play a vital role in helping us achieve our net-zero ambitions while delivering more affordable, cleaner, and secure energy throughout the country."

Alistair Phillips-Davies, chief executive of SSE plc, emphasized the significance of the project, noting, "Seagreen represents a significant milestone for Scotland and highlights the country's ability to execute large-scale clean energy projects efficiently. With the potential to power up to 1.6 million homes, Seagreen will substantially contribute to energy security and further solidify Scotland and the UK's leadership in clean energy generation.
