Promoting Harmony Between Floating Wind Farms, Marine Life, and Other Industries: RWE Launches Global Competition
Posted 16/10/2023 12:17
RWE, the German energy company and a prominent player in the offshore wind industry, has initiated its inaugural "Floating Wind Co-use Competition" on a global scale. The competition aims to discover innovative solutions that facilitate the coexistence of floating wind farms with various maritime activities and promote biodiversity. Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, emphasized the significance of sustainability and biodiversity enhancement during the entire lifecycle of wind farm development, from inception and construction to operation. RWE's commitment to fostering innovation in this domain is evident through initiatives like introducing the world's first recyclable rotor blades, engaging in "green" fuel service vessel agreements, and exploring the implementation of artificial reefs to bolster biodiversity.
The competition invites participation from start-ups, scale-ups, research institutions, as well as individuals and organizations interested in proposing strategies to support the harmonious coexistence of floating wind farms with other maritime activities, with particular consideration for local marine stakeholders, especially the fishing industry. Additionally, RWE seeks innovations that minimize the environmental impact on marine wildlife and generate a net-positive effect on biodiversity. These innovations should simultaneously create positive opportunities for local marine stakeholders while safeguarding the marine ecosystem.
Winning submissions will have the opportunity to collaborate with RWE's in-house experts to explore the application of their innovative solutions in the development of floating offshore wind farms. These experts are part of RWE's global development teams, which are actively advancing floating wind projects across Europe, Asia, and America. The competition winners will also receive a financial research grant to further refine and develop their pioneering ideas. Interested participants can submit their proposals to RWE until December 31, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. (CEST). This competition exemplifies RWE's commitment to advancing the offshore wind industry while fostering environmental sustainability and coexistence with marine ecosystems and industries.
