National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has introduced an innovative installation vessel concept designed specifically to address the distinct challenges posed by the emerging floating offshore wind sector. As floating wind farms are typically located farther offshore, in deeper waters, and harsher environments, a new and robust installation strategy is required.
NOV's Floating Wind Installation Vessel (FWIV) concept, developed as part of GustoMSC's Enhydra offshore wind support vessel series, is engineered to operate safely, effectively, and for extended durations in the harshest environments and deep waters. The modular and integrated design of the vessel facilitates the installation and hookup of various floater types, mooring systems, and dynamic cables.
The FWIV concept is the result of collaborative efforts involving NOV's marine and construction business unit, offshore wind developers, EPIC contractors, and specialist original equipment manufacturers. The GustoMSC vessel design offers a flexible deck layout and specific provisions for integrating mission equipment, including electric subsea cranes for lifting and handling, and Remacut cable-lay systems.
NOV sees significant potential in the nascent floating wind market, considering it one of the greatest opportunities for renewable energy resources in the next decade. Regions worldwide, such as Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including the U.S., especially the West Coast, offer vast potential for floating wind projects. By ensuring compliance with relevant regional requirements, including the U.S. Jones Act, NOV aims to broaden the potential scope of the local supply chain for the Enhydra FWIV. This approach allows the vessel to be constructed at shipyards globally.
The new FWIV concept aligns with the industry's growing need for specialized vessels capable of efficiently handling the unique demands of floating offshore wind installations, thereby contributing to the expansion of renewable energy resources on a global scale.
