DEME, a prominent Belgian dredging, environmental, and marine engineering company, has joined forces with FARIA Renewables, a Greek renewable energy developer and independent power producer. The collaboration is established through a cooperation agreement aimed at exploring and co-developing offshore wind farms in Greece.
The move comes in response to the increasing global emphasis on offshore wind technology as a pivotal element in achieving zero-emission targets. The Greek government has recently taken significant steps in this direction by unveiling the draft 'National Offshore Wind Farms Development Program.' This program, overseen by the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA), outlines eligible Organized Development Areas and envisions a capacity of approximately 4.9 GW for offshore wind projects in the mid-term (up to 2030-2032).
The program further designates the marine area between Evros-Samothraki for pilot offshore wind farm projects. Looking beyond the mid-term, the program estimates a potential capacity of around 12.4 GW for offshore wind projects in the longer term, post-2030-2032. The collaboration between DEME and FARIA Renewables positions them to actively explore and capitalize on the opportunities presented by the Greek offshore wind energy sector, aligning with the country's ambitious renewable energy goals.
